Before we can be friends, I have to ask you: Have you seen this movie?
Because if you haven’t….well, I’m going to insist that you watch it before our friendship moves forward. There is entirely too much to love about Funny Face. And on a rare day off last week, after about fifteen minutes of daytime TV (fifteen minutes too much if you ask me), I popped it into the DVD player and was reminded yet again why this might be the perfect film.
If you haven’t seen it, let me just give you a quick rundown.
Maggie Prescott is the editor of Quality magazine. Bored with the latest trends, she’s looking for something new and fresh. Really folks – what’s not to love about a movie that starts off with an entire song and dance routine dedicated to the color pink?
Along with her photographer, played by Fred Astaire, she overtakes a Greenwich Village bookstore to stage a photo shoot, wreaking havoc and creating a big ole mess for bookish philosopher/bookstore employee Jo (Audrey Hepburn) to clean up.
Despite claims from the others that she is “funny looking,” Fred Astaire insists that she has a fresh new look, and convinces Maggie to make Jo the new face of Quality magazine. But Jo thinks modeling and women’s fashion magazines are silly and frivolous and tries to refuse the offer.
Until she is told that agreeing to model means going to Paris. And that pretty much seals the deal for her.
She sings.
She models.
She dances. You know, the usual.
I’m leaving it at that and INSISTING that you rent/buy/Netflix this movie immediately. Even if you’ve already seen it. Ok?
Ok.
OK, I’m gonna rent this ASAP (I’ve never seen it! Oops!) Thanks for the synopsis. I want to be Jo! I want to go to Paris! xo.
You wil love love love love love it. I like it even more than Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
