Easter Egg-perimentation

Thanks for humoring my insane cheesy blog post titles sometimes.

:::bows:::

Today, I’ve got a guest post up over at Bourbon and Boots, where I’m sharing how to create marbleized Easter eggs. They turned out really well, but while I was making them, I experimented with a few other ways to dye eggs. I used water, vinegar and food coloring for all of these eggs, so they would be edible later on (when I definitely plan to make deviled eggs out of them).

For all the eggs here, I used this simple formula:

– Hardboiled eggs

– 1/2 cup water

– 1 Tbsp vinegar

– 10 drops food coloring in any color or combination of colors

Aaron has been bringing home gorgeous farm-fresh eggs, thanks to one of his co-workers, so when I was hard boiling eggs, I included a few brown and light green eggs, which created really rich, beautiful hues.

I’d seen ombre Easter egg tutorials online that involved six cups, labeled A-F, all with an assigned number of food coloring drops. Just FYI: that is totally not necessary. Make one cup for each color, and put each egg in for 30 seconds longer than the last one. Here, I started with a white egg in the dye for 30 seconds, then the second egg was in dye for a minute, then I switched to light green eggs, then brown.

And finally, the marbleized eggs for Bourbon and Boots, which you can find out how to make over on their site today.

Are you dying eggs this year? Any fun ideas to share?

Botanical Print-Inspired Thanksgiving Table

Botanical Print-Inspired Thanksgiving Tabletop | Rosemary on the TV #holidays #tabletop #entertaining

Every year, Aaron and I host 10-15 of our closest pals for Friendsgiving, a full-blown Thanksgiving dinner at our house. While I love making mushy foods and pies, one of my favorite parts is setting the table. This year was no different. Lately, I’ve been sort of obsessed with this website, the Biodiversity Heritage Library’s Flickr account, and want to frame those botanical prints all over my house. I used that look as my inspiration, and created a tabletop with a mix of items I had and only a couple of new purchases to give the table a botanical-inspired feel, with gold accents.

The inspiration:

I placed fresh herbs (thyme, sage and oregano) in a wooden box, used a mix of gold and mercury glass votives, and had a couple of gold and bronze animal figurines scattered around.

My entertaining secret: keep a bag of coffee beans in your pantry. I use them as decorative filler for jars and candle votives. They’re inexpensive and they keep forever, and when you burn a candle in coffee beans, it smells amazing!

I mixed and matched plates from my collection of pottery dinnerware and botanical-print plates by John Derian for Target. To pull the gold from the votives into each place setting, I used napkins with a gold-leaf print.

My flowers photographed pink, but they were actually shades of purple. I used a mix of purple peonies, hanging amaranthus, scabiosa pods, purple alstromeria, mixed greenery,  and fern leaves.

Dress Up and the Weekend

Happy Friday! Do you have big plans? We’re keeping it low key around here, but because Halloween is just around the corner, I’ll probably be attempting to throw together a last minute costume. Need costume ideas? Camille Styles has rounded up a fabulous showing. I love this Annie Hall look, though the Mary Poppins and Wednesday Adams costumes are strong contenders.

DIY Halloween Snake Wreath

Honest to goodness, I’m not much of a craft person. I usually feel like by the time I buy all the stuff and take the time to make whatever it is I’m making, I could’ve just bought it at the store for the same amount. But I saw this wreath on Pinterest and mama had to have! It turned out to be a fairly easy thing to make and worked perfectly for my front door.

What you need:

SNAKES!!! I got 48 plastic snakes for $8 here, then purchased three more in different sizes and shapes from Michaels, just to keep it varied.

A grapevine wreath, also purchased from Michaels for about $8. They have tons of different sizes you can choose from. I liked this one because it was flat, and since I have a storm door, I knew I’d be able to close the door over it.

A can of black spray paint for $5 and some floral wire for $2, also both purchased at Michaels. Plus scissors and a tarp, of course.

Step 1: Spray paint your wreath and snakes. Allow to dry, flip ’em over and spray paint the back.

Step 2: When everything is dry, arrange your snakes on the wreath. There’s no rhyme or reason to it, just set them all over. The larger snakes, I wrapped around the wreath. Then cut a piece of floral wire and start twisting it around the wreath and parts of each snake. I put about two pieces of wire around each snake – one at each end, and when I could, I wrapped the wire around two snakes at once.

Step 2.5: After I wrapped each wire bit, I tucked the twisted part under to hide it. Don’t worry about the wire showing because:

Step 3: Once all the snakes were wired securely to the wreath (I picked it up and kinda shook it a little to make sure none came off), I gave it one last spray with the spray paint – focusing especially on the green wire parts.

Instead, I found a little bit of black grosgrain ribbon left over from my bridesmaids’ gift boxes, tied it around the top of the wreath and just taped it across the top of the door. That easy!

And there you have it! A super simple and NOT garish Halloween wreath for about $25.

10 Favorite: Easter Eggs

Total honesty: I have never dyed an egg in my life.

Ok, actual total honesty: There might’ve been one Easter when I was a kid when I dyed an egg. I have a vague memory of it.

But these days? With my schedule? And no kids? Yeah, Easter eggs just don’t happen. Every year, I pin my favorites and every year, Easter comes and goes, I throw together a side dish, arrive at Grandmother’s house, eat till I’m comatose and eggs go undyed once again. But I won’t be discouraged! One year, I WILL do something totally awesome to eggs (besides this, which is maybe the most awesome thing you can do to an egg). And until then, I will continue to amass creative egg ideas.

Here are my current favorites:EasterEggs1

Valentine’s Day Gifts for Him

Aaron and I aren’t big Valentine’s Day people. We don’t go all out because Aaron’s birthday is at the tail end of December and mine is the week after V-day, plus we just got each other gifts for Christmas…it’s just gift overload for us this time of year! But we usually share a heart-shaped pizza from Papa John’s and exchange a small gift. Last year, Aaron got me a sweet print from Roll & Tumble Press and I got him a bottle of Maker’s Mark (anything with red wax on it counts as romantic, right?). How do you celebrate V-day?ValentineGiftsforHim
