Gift Guide : The Martha

Every group of friends has one – she’s equal parts hostess, chef and entertainer. She throws a fabulous party, mixes a mean drink and always keeps extra towels in the guest bath. She’s neatly dog-earred a page from Martha Stewart’s book. Serve up a gift she deserves on a silver platter.

Happy Thanksgiving + A Gilded-Giving Tablescape

Oh my, Thanksgiving snuck up on me. I’d planned to post this earlier in the week, but alas! It’s 8:30 the night before Thanksgiving and here I am. C’est la vie!

Saturday night, we had a small group of friends over for a Thanksgiving-themed dinner party. It was so much fun to bust the leaves out for my dining table and make recipes that you’ve always wanted to try but can’t on the actual holiday without complaints from your great Uncle Ed.

Know what I mean?

Anyway, I used my pottery-esque plates, woven placemats and olive green cloth napkins and accented the earthy colors with gold-speckled votives and gilded table linens. I love mixing rustic and gold elements, so I put this little tablescape together:

{clockwise from top: hydrangeas, wishbone, serving bowl, woven charger, dinner and dessert plates, votives, napkin rings, olive napkin, glassware}

As for what I cooked – a lot of the recipes I used came from Pinterest!

Apple-Bourbon Turkey and Gravy – Aaron made the turkey and it was amazing! The apple-bourbon marinade smelled like heaven!

Martha Stewart’s Macaroni and Cheese. This recipe is killer. I’m making it again for family festivities tomorrow. White sharp cheddar and gruyere with torn bread cubes on top? Martha wins, as usual.

Apple Pecan Cornbread Dressing – I had to try this recipe after having it at a friend’s house last year. Her’s was so delicious. While it was still good, mine turned out a little dry and probably could have used more apple juice.

For dessert – s’mores pie! The pie “crust” was closer to cookie dough and needed significantly more flour than the recipe called for, but other than that – it’s marshmallow creme and Hershey’s bars between graham cracker pie crust. You can’t go wrong.

There was much more, but we had pretty much demolished it before I even remembered I should take photos.

And that, my friends, is what Thanksgiving is allllllllllllllll about.

Have a good one!

Front Porch Round Up

While I’m appreciative (slash in awe of) all those DIYers out there, Aaron and I definitely know our limits. And for projects that we don’t feel confident tackling ourselves, we call Stanley the Handyman. Stanley was here today to build us a new set up attic stairs, so now we can store stuff in our 150 degree attic!

Oh, not a good idea? Okay.

Anyway, we had Stanley take a glance at the front door. It has gaps around the edges that you can see sunlight through, and rusty weather stripping that sometimes catches on my clothes when I walk through it. Stanley recommended we replace the door entirely and I went, “Yay!!!”

I really want a front door with a window, because our living room could use any extra light it can get. And guess what? Aaron actually agreed when I asked if I could paint it yellow!

So I got all excited about decorating our front porch around a yellow door!

Front porch now:

Swinging 90s

Even though it’s unbearably hot outside right now, with temps in the 90s every day this week, I still find myself missing the porch swing we had at my old house. I’m talking four mailing addresses ago. It’s been awhile. But I loved that porch swing no matter how hot, cold or rainy it was outside.

I don’t think a porch swing is in my future at this house. Front porch is too small. Do you have a porch swing? Can I come sit in it? I’ll bring lemonade!

Solving my wallpaper dilemma.

Well, I’ve figured out the solution to my to-wallpaper-or-not-to-wallpaper inner struggle. You can read more about that here.

While browsing my daily blogs yesterday, I noticed a contest on Young House Love for a gift certificate from Royal Design Studio. With one click of my mouse, the clouds parted and I heard birds chirping and an angelic chorus singing, “Aaaaaahhhhh!”

Stencils. Duh. Of course I hadn’t thought of that. They are cheaper than wallpaper, easier to apply and get rid of, have basically the same effect and I can control how in-your-face the outcome is.

We decided we’d try stenciling the long wall in the dining room. So last night, Aaron and I scoured the Royal Design Studio website and narrowed it down to five:

We played the “least favorite” game, and as most couples do, Aaron immediately eliminated my favorite (the first one), and I immediately eliminated his favorite (the last one). We were both sort of “meh” about the blue Moroccan print in the middle, which left us with Endless Circle Lattice and Large Hollywood Squares.

We aren’t completely decided either way, but we’re leaning toward Endless Circle Lattice. Then, our next decision will be of paint color. We have four options:

1. We can stencil in white over whatever color our living/dining room walls eventually become.

2. We can stencil in a lighter color of whatever our living/dining room walls eventually become.

3. We can create an accent wall in a different color and stencil in white.

4. We can create an accent wall in a different color and stencil in whatever our living/dining room walls eventually become.

My favorite example of #3 is this room, which I love:

What are your thoughts? Have you ever tried stenciling? Are accent walls totally played out?

Any and all opinions on this matter are welcome. Please and thank you.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

I’ve got a sunburn and a homemade pitcher of margaritas. Which can only mean one thing:

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

1. Eat Ancho chicken tacos with cilantro slaw and avocado cream. 2. Embellish with tin cans from the international foods section of your grocery store. 3. Wear this gorgeous dress from Anthropologie. 4. Socialize with friends under twinkling lights. 5. Indulge in margarita cupcakes! 6. Please guests with festive appetizers. 7. Experiment with different flavors of Mexican soda. 8. Play with pinatas. 9. Decorate with DIY paper flags. 10. Drink up with fresh lime margaritas.

A girl can dream.

And this girl is dreaming about quaint little cottages in the English country. It baffles my mind that places like this exist (except that last one, which, I just read, was a fake, fiberglass house built especially for the movie “The Holiday”).

Working hard, or hardly working? Office upgrade!

Lately, I’ve been feeling the need to inject some life into my office at work. I’ve been at this job nearly a year and haven’t done anything to my desk to make it my own. I need a space that inspires me, for goodness sake! I’m in a creative profession!

So here’s a little roundup of desktop accessories that would liven up my desktop!
